James Maher is a business lawyer who works with great resolve to achieve his client’s business objectives, both through general counseling and completing transactions in finance, real estate, and corporate matters. Jim sees the role of the business lawyer as multi-faceted. Beyond the x’s and o’s of lawyering, he believes skillful representation necessarily involves pursuing a client’s business goals as a partner, with a keen understanding of their concerns, so as to chart the best path forward. Jim and his team have often guided clients in acquisitions and financing transactions that have involved several of the Firm’s specialized practice areas. This deep and varied experience allows him to evaluate risk and find efficient ways for clients to achieve their goals.
Jim serves clients in a wide variety of industries, including institutional finance, real estate ownership and development, middle market, and emerging technology companies. With this background, he and his team have partnered on many successful outcomes for institutional lenders and borrowers in commercial real estate transactions, corporate loans, and private placements throughout the United States. Jim is also active in workouts of debt and equity investments, financial restructurings, and asset dispositions, as well as many types of commercial and corporate transactions.
Jim is a member of the Real Estate Finance Association and the Connecticut Venture Group. He is the past-Chairman of the Young Lawyers Section on Real Property and Land Use Committee of the Connecticut Bar Association. Jim also has written and lectured on various topics concerning real estate investment and workouts. He has been recognized by Super Lawyers® for his accomplishments in the area of Real Estate: Business since 2017, and was included in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 editions of The Best Lawyers in America® for Real Estate Law.
